In 95% of B2B deals, the vendor that won was already on the buyer's shortlist on day one, according to 6sense's 2025 buyer research. That number sits behind most of the trends below.
Buyers now build that shortlist with AI answer engines and their own committee. Sales hears about it last. In 2027, marketing's job is to get on that list and then prove it with pipeline, not clicks.
This list replaces the one we published in December 2023. Two of its calls, AI search and AI-assisted content, arrived faster than we expected. Others, like AI features inside every tool, are now just how marketing works. It also builds on our 2025 B2B Marketing Trends Report. This version is for teams with long sales cycles, technical buyers and big committees, in manufacturing, B2B SaaS and energy and cleantech.
1. AI answer engines now shape the vendor shortlist
Buyers start research in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. Forrester's State of Business Buying 2026 calls generative AI search "the starting point for B2B buyers." In 6sense's 2025 buyer research, 94% of buyers said they use large language models while they buy.
Your website still matters. Forrester notes that AI answers are often incomplete, so buyers look for validation from people they trust, inside and outside their company. What changed is where buyers first meet you: more and more, inside an AI answer.
The click data shows it. SparkToro found that 68% of US Google searches ended without a click from January to April 2026, up from about 60% in 2024, per Search Engine Land's write-up. The two studies used different data providers, so read the jump as a direction, not an exact change. AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of searches.
Pew Research Center saw the same thing from another angle. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits. Without one, 15%. Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary. That's data on US adults overall, not B2B buyers, so treat it as direction, not a benchmark.
In the same write-up, SparkToro's Rand Fishkin gives advice that fits: build brand and influence where your audience already spends time, even when it sends no visits.
We hear the same thing from the marketing and business leaders we talk to across manufacturing, energy, agritech and SaaS. Of the companies that came to us new in Q3 2026, about one in four said an AI assistant like ChatGPT or Claude pointed them our way.
What it means for long sales cycles. Industrial and energy buyers ask detailed questions about tolerances, certifications, operating ranges and how one option compares with another. AI tools answer from content that is clear, structured and repeated elsewhere. Specs locked in PDFs or behind forms rarely get cited.
Take a question like "which gearboxes hold up in washdown food plants?" An AI tool can only name you if a page states your IP rating, your materials and the applications you serve, in plain text. "Rugged and reliable" gives it nothing to quote. Our guide to how B2B brands earn citations in AI answers covers how these systems pick sources.
Each AI tool meets B2B buyers in a different place and pulls from a different source. That changes what you check. One industrial services leader told us: "Bing is being pushed by Copilot. So anyone who's doing the AEO strategy has to consider Bing now."
| Tool | Where B2B buyers use it | Where answers come from | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | As a first research stop, outside any search engine | Its training data plus live web searchShows source links when it searches | That OpenAI's search crawler can reach your key pages |
| Claude | Long research, writing and analysis sessions | Its training data plus web searchShows source links when it searches | That Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User aren't blocked |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | At the top of Google results for research questions | Google's search index | Classic SEO still decides whether you're eligible |
| Gemini | Inside Google Workspace, Chrome and Android | Google's index and services | The same pages and rankings as Google search |
| Microsoft Copilot | Inside Microsoft 365, Teams and EdgeWhere many B2B teams work all day | Bing's index | Your Bing rankings, which most B2B teams never look at |
| Perplexity | Heavy research sessionsEvery answer lists its sources | Live web search across many sites | Third-party mentions, reviews and pages that answer one question well |
What to do in 2027:
- Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews 20 to 30 real buyer questions. Record whether you appear and what they say.
- Publish ungated spec, application and comparison pages in plain HTML.
- Check that robots.txt and your CDN don't block the AI crawlers you want citations from.
- Track AI referral traffic as its own channel in GA4 and HubSpot.
This is the core of how we approach SEO and AEO for long sales cycles.
One to watch: AI agents that research and compare vendors for the buyer. Adoption data is still thin. Keep it on the radar, not in the 2027 budget.
2. Buyers pick a favorite before sales is involved
Buyers reach out a little earlier than they used to. They still choose their favorite on their own.
The same 6sense research shows first contact moved from 69% to 61% of the way through the journey. AI is one reason: 58% of buyers engaged earlier because they wanted to see how vendors use it. Cycles also shortened, from 11.3 to 10.1 months, though 6sense notes part of that drop comes from a sample with more short-cycle physical goods deals.
But buyers started 79% of those conversations. And the favorite at the end of their private research still won 77% of the time.
The group making the call is big. Forrester counts 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers in a typical purchase. Procurement is a decision maker in 53% of buying cycles. More than 60% of buyers now use a trial. For purchases of $10 million or more, 78% run one first.
We see this in the companies we talk to across our industries. In Q3 2026, nearly two thirds of the companies that came to us new were comparing several vendors at once. In more than a third, the person who would sign off wasn't in the room. It was a CEO, a CFO or an owner.
What it means for long sales cycles. For a six-figure industrial or cleantech purchase, most of the decision happens before your first meeting. Engineering, finance, operations and procurement each judge you differently. Many never talk to your sales team. We go deeper in why industrial marketing keeps losing the committee.
A simple way to plan: list each role and what it checks.
| Role | What they check | Asset that helps |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering | Specs, fit, test results | Spec sheets and application pages |
| Operations | Downtime, install, support | Implementation timeline and support model |
| Finance | Total cost, payback | Cost of ownership calculator |
| Procurement | Terms, risk, compliance | Vendor fact sheet with certifications |
What to do in 2027:
- Build at least one strong asset per committee role. Procurement and finance are the most often missed.
- Offer a real trial, pilot or sample program. Make it easy to request.
- Add two questions to every discovery call: "Who else did you look at?" and "Where did you first hear about us?"
3. Proof matters more than volume as AI content spreads
AI made content cheap. Buyers responded by checking it.
In a Gartner survey of 645 B2B buyers, 69% said they prefer to check AI-generated insights with a sales rep. Their trust is split. 51% say they are more likely to get misleading information from generative AI. 49% say the same about sales reps.
More output hasn't fixed results either. In the Content Marketing Institute's 2026 B2B research, only 12% of marketers called their marketing highly effective.
Technical buyers spot thin proof fast. A marketing lead at a US manufacturer told us about past agency work: "I don't want you to do something and we spend a lot of time ripping it apart and redoing it." They had been through it too many times.
It's a common story. Among the companies we work with, the most common bottleneck is review time from their own engineers and experts. Content that needs heavy rework stalls in that queue. They also want proof from companies like theirs.
What it means for long sales cycles. For technical buyers, proof means test data, field results, cost of ownership models, certifications and named engineers. AI can't fake those. And they're exactly what AI tools like to cite.
Proof also has to live outside your site. Buyers and AI tools both look for it in reviews, distributor pages, trade press and customer posts. A claim that only appears on your website counts for less.
What to do in 2027:
- Commit to one original data asset a year: a customer benchmark, a field study or a short industry survey.
- Put a named subject matter expert on every flagship piece, with their role and credentials.
- Give sales a validation kit: case data, references and calculators they can send after a call.
Our Green New Perspective podcast is one version of this. It puts named founders and operators on the record about real projects.
4. Flat budgets put AI spending and pipeline under CFO scrutiny
Budgets aren't growing. Expectations are.
The Gartner 2026 CMO Spend Survey puts marketing budgets at 7.8% of company revenue, up from 7.7% in 2025. CMOs now spend 15.3% of that on AI. 56% say they lack the budget to deliver their 2026 strategy.
One caveat: most of the 401 marketing leaders Gartner surveyed work at companies with more than $1 billion in revenue. Our marketing budget benchmarks by revenue tier cover what smaller manufacturers spend.
The bigger gap is readiness. In Gartner's survey, 70% of CMOs call AI leadership a critical goal, but only 30% report mature AI readiness.
The SmarterX 2026 State of AI for Business Report shows the same thing across more than 2,100 professionals. 47% of organizations are still piloting AI. Only 25% are scaling it.
The basics are missing too. Only 13% have an AI roadmap, an AI council, a generative AI policy and an ethics policy in place. 32% of respondents say their company offers no AI training. On the SmarterX podcast, Paul Roetzer, founder and CEO of SmarterX and the Marketing AI Institute, put it simply: "This is not a technology thing." He frames AI adoption as a communication and change management job. Teams that treat AI as a tool purchase stay stuck in pilots.
What it means for long sales cycles. A 9 to 18 month cycle makes quarterly ROI hard to show. MQL counts don't survive a budget review. A CFO wants to know what marketing added to pipeline and what it cost.
Weak reporting is one of the complaints we hear most. More than a third of the companies we spoke with in Q3 couldn't tie their past marketing spend to results. The industrial services leader we quoted above summed it up: "We know what the numbers are that we're spending. We don't know what we're getting back."
What to do in 2027:
- Report pipeline influenced, opportunity velocity and win rate on marketing-sourced deals. Drop MQL volume as a headline number.
- Fund AI where it removes a cost you can name, such as agency hours or production time. Report the saving.
- Build a one-page marketing P&L your CFO can read in five minutes.
That page needs four lines: spend by program, pipeline each program influenced, closed revenue from marketing-sourced deals and cost per opportunity. Show the same lines every quarter. The trend matters more than any single quarter.
5. Measurement has to work without the click
The privacy shock marketers prepared for never came. Google kept third-party cookies in Chrome. In October 2025 it announced it would retire 10 Privacy Sandbox technologies, including Attribution Reporting and Topics, citing low adoption.
The real blind spot is elsewhere. Buyers research in AI chats, peer conversations and private Slack or Teams groups. No tracking tag sees any of it.
What it means for long sales cycles. If your attribution model only credits the last trackable click, it undercounts the channels that build the shortlist. Then the wrong programs get cut.
We've seen it firsthand. One company told us at first that they found us on Google. A week later, they said it was through an AI tool. A client's marketing lead sees the same gap in her own reports: research done in AI tools shows up as direct traffic. Our post on the manufacturing dark funnel explains how to find these buyers.
What to do in 2027:
- Add a required free-text "How did you hear about us?" field to demo and RFQ forms.
- Combine those answers with CRM opportunity data, not just form fills.
- Track branded search and direct traffic as demand signals. Fishkin notes that branded and high-intent searches still benefit from SEO, so a rise in them points to demand other channels created.
- Clean your CRM data so account-level reporting works.
Free-text answers are messy. Group them each month into a short list: AI tool, search, peer or colleague, trade show, podcast, LinkedIn and other. A few dozen answers a quarter will show channels your analytics never credited.
6. ChatGPT ads are live but hard to use for B2B
ChatGPT now sells ads. OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people a week. In May 2026 it opened a self-serve Ads Manager beta in the US with cost-per-click buying, according to Axios. Earlier pilot buys needed at least $50,000. In October 2026, OpenAI began testing ads inside ChatGPT image generation in the US.
The tracking is there. OpenAI offers a pixel and a Conversions API, plus attribution partners. The limits are what matter for B2B.
- Many B2B buyers never see the ads. Ads run on the Free and Go plans and in logged-out use. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts are ad-free, per OpenAI. A buyer on a company ChatGPT seat sees none.
- You can't target a role or a company. Targeting runs on context hints, which OpenAI says are not exact-match keywords, plus country and platform. OpenAI's targeting docs list no job title, industry, company size or account list options.
- Customer lists need scale. A custom audience needs at least 25,000 matched users before you can target it. Many B2B account lists are smaller than that.
- Optimization stops at the form. A campaign can optimize toward one standard event, such as a lead. Custom events, like a qualified opportunity, can be tracked but not optimized for. Reporting is aggregated.
Every named result OpenAI has published so far comes from a consumer brand, in categories like weight loss, wellness and ecommerce. That fits the channel. Large consumer and CPG brands can use broad reach and conversation context. For B2B, proceed with caution.
What it means for long sales cycles. A channel that misses work accounts, can't target a buying committee and can't optimize past a form fill is a test, not a budget shift. Expect formats, targeting and plan rules to keep changing through 2027.
What to do in 2027:
- Keep search and LinkedIn as your core paid channels.
- Test only if your buyers use ChatGPT on free or personal accounts. Ask a few customers which plan they use.
- Run a small, time-boxed test with a holdout or geo split so you can read real lift.
- Measure against pipeline in your CRM, not clicks or in-platform conversions.
Keep the first test narrow. A few high-intent category questions, one region, a fixed budget and an end date. No effect on pipeline within your normal cycle? Stop, and look again in six months.
7. Cost pressure and green-claims rules shape the message
Sector conditions will shape what buyers want to hear in 2027.
Manufacturing. Rising raw material costs topped the list of challenges for a second straight quarter in the National Association of Manufacturers' Q3 2026 survey. Manufacturers expect input costs to rise 5.0% over the next year. Buyers under that pressure care about cost of ownership, supply resilience and domestic sourcing.
Energy and cleantech. Under the 2025 budget law, wind and solar projects had to start construction by July 4, 2026, or be in service by December 31, 2027, to qualify for the clean electricity credits, per Latham & Watkins. IRS Notice 2025-42 applies that cutoff to the 45Y and 48E credits. Storage, grid and efficiency stories should lead with economics. Not subsidies.
B2B SaaS. Remember the 58% who reach out early to check how vendors use AI. SaaS buyers want your AI features, data handling and pricing before a demo. Plain answers on those pages get read by the committee and by the AI tools it asks.
Green claims. EU Directive 2024/825 has applied since September 27, 2026. It bans generic environmental claims like "eco-friendly" unless the company can show recognized excellent environmental performance. It targets consumer communication, so B2B coverage depends on each country's law. In the US, the FTC's 2012 Green Guides still apply. The review the FTC opened in 2022 has not produced new guides. Our post on avoiding greenwashing covers the common traps.
What to do in 2027:
- Lead manufacturing messaging with total cost and supply risk, backed by numbers.
- Sell clean energy on payback and reliability.
- Check every environmental claim against its evidence, and get legal review for EU markets.
How our 2024 trend calls held up
Here is how each trend from our December 2023 list holds up.
| Our 2024 trend | Status in 2027 | Where it lives now |
|---|---|---|
| AI-assisted content comes of age | Happened. AI content is now everywhere | Trend 3: proof over volume |
| AI built into existing tools | Baseline. Every platform has it | Trend 4: show a return on AI spend |
| User-generated content comeback | Grew into third-party validation | Trends 1 and 3 |
| AI SEO takes off | Happened faster than expected | Trend 1: AI answer engines |
| Video grows in importance | Still a useful format, not a shift | A way to deliver proof (trend 3) |
| B2B podcasts and repurposing | Still a useful format, not a shift | A way to deliver proof (trend 3) |
| Authenticity matters more | Became something buyers test | Trend 3: buyers check with a person |
What these B2B marketing trends mean for your 2027 plans
All seven trends point to one gap. Buyers decide earlier, in places you can't see. Budgets demand proof you can show.
You can't do all seven at once. Start with three:
- Run the AI answer audit from trend 1. It's quick and shows where you stand.
- Add self-reported attribution to your forms. Every month without it is data you won't get back.
- Pick one original proof asset for the year and put a named expert on it.
Those three cover the shortlist, the measurement gap and the proof buyers look for. The other four can follow.
